What is the Festival of Speed?

The Festival of Speed is a celebration of the history of motor sport and can justifiably claim to be the world’s biggest and most diverse classic motor sports event. Taking place outside Goodwood House, using the main road through the Park as the track, it’s the only occasion where you’ll see in action the greatest competition cars and star drivers from the entire history of motor sport. Famous drivers and riders have attended such as Sir Stirling Moss, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Nigel Mansell, Mika Hakkinen, Johnny Herbert, Juan Pablo Montoya, Richard Petty, Carl Fogarty, Giacomo Agostini, Troy Corser, Troy Bayliss, Jean Alesi, Jacky Ickx, Marcus Gronholm, Petter Solberg, Hannu Mikkola and Alan Jones to name just a few. The Festival is an unrivalled social and sporting occasion in the motor racing calendar.

The Hill Climb

A principal attraction of the Festival of Speed is the hillclimb competition, which takes place throughout the Festival weekend on a 1.16-mile course on parkland roads in the grounds of Goodwood House.
The competition begins with free practice on Friday, when around 200 vehicles run up the course in single file, each setting off at one-minute intervals. The cars are grouped thematically into classes of comparable machinery, with the oldest cars running first.
On Saturday, each competitor completes two further practice runs, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The two runs are repeated on Sunday, and each competitor's fastest time determines his/her final result in the competition.

Super Cars

The Festival of Speed has an enviable reputation for attracting the world's most significant racing cars from every era.

It is the only event of its type in the world where you can see steam cars and leviathan Edwardian racers running alongside top Formula One teams or the latest Le Mans challengers, plus many of the significant motor sport landmark cars between.

SuperBikes

Motorcycles make up a key part of the Festival of Speed, and over the years a mouth-watering collection of great machines and riders have gathered at Goodwood in celebration of motorcycling history.

Around 40 important machines gather at the Festival each year, with entry by invitation only from Lord March. The field is selected thematically, with the motorcycles chosen specifically to reflect the event's major themes, and many are ridden by famous names. Carl Fogarty, the late, great Barry Sheene, Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Giacomo Agostini, Luigi Taveri, John Surtees, Jim Redman, John Reynolds, John McGuinness, Troy Baylis, Troy Corser, Randy Mamola, Scott Parker, Paul Smart, Mick Grant and Marco Lucchinelli have all competed at Goodwood in recent years.
